By Parentshop Staff

We are happy to announce that Sue Foley is joining our team as a Parentshop presenter and consultant! Sue Foley is a Clinical and Forensic Social Worker with nearly 50 years of experience as a social worker in various government and non-government services. Most recently she has been an Authorised Clinician and Director of the NSW Children’s Court Clinic. Sue is committed to capacity building for professionals, throughout their careers; to social justice, respect, and empowerment in all that helping professionals do.

Sue Foley’s Professional Background

Sue Foley worked in the area of child protection since the 1970s. She started her career by helping children and families who needed support in front of the children’s court or in hospitals due to serious illnesses. To do so, she worked for various hospitals, non-governmental organisations, and community services. She ran group homes for teenagers, did family therapy for children with mental health or development problems, and provided consultations for the child protection field.

In the 1990s Sue Foley started as a manager for child and family services at Careforce. Here she offered counselling to adolescents who couldn’t live at home due to concerns about their care and safety. From there she went to the Department of Community Services as an education project officer to implement and monitor the new helpline. And later on, she went as a senior social worker to the Children’s Hospital in Western Sydney to work in child protection with children who were brought in by police, community services, or doctors because of domestic violence, abuse, or mental health problems.

In 2015 Sue Foley left psychological medicine and was appointed to be the director of the Children’s Court Clinic. For the wellbeing of children, Sue Foley and her staff did assessments all around Australia to empower mothers and fathers to be the best parents they can possibly be. With the same goal she now starts at Parentshop and will be hosting Tough Conversations in Child Protection (TCCP) courses, to help you to support the families you work with in achieving their goals.

Sue Foley’s opinion on the course Tough Conversations™ in Child Protection (TCCP)

According to Sue Foley, TCCP’s greatest benefit is to provide family specialists, protection workers, and legal service professionals with a ready-to-use framework for challenging conversations. Frameworks or templates are especially helpful when people are confronted with high emotions, facing intense situations, or feeling anxious themselves. This is why the system already has numerous frameworks in place, but none of them is as effective, comprehensive, and thoughtful as Parentshop’s. Sue Foley emphasises that this course is not only directed towards beginners, but all levels and even experienced social workers can benefit from it. They will gain new insights on how to master tough conversations with empathy, curiosity, clarity, and acceptance in order to improve parenting and to facilitate communication with families and involved agencies.
